Summary: It's Merlin's birthday. Lance has no idea what to do. Yet he somehow gets it right.
A/N: Happy Halloween! :D
Sweets thoughtfully chewed on his lip as he blankly stared at the Yellow Pages on his desk. He jumped when the door was flung opened revealing Brennan and Booth.
“Hey Sweets,” called Booth out in his usual lazy greeting. His eyes took in a couple changes to the room for Halloween: a couple cobwebs, a few older looking books from his collection, and faux jack o lantern. Including the vase of black roses that Merlin had given him for a joke.
“Getting into the spirit of All Hallows Eve Doctor Sweets?” questioned Brennan as she touched a flower.
“They’re from Merlin. And yes I suppose I am. Especially since Halloween is Merlin’s birthday.”
Well Merlin assumed it was his birthday due to the fact that he was born around the time of the Druid holiday of Samhain. So he simply just took the assigned day of the festival once a calendar system was better established.
“So what are you two love birds doing?” asked Booth placing a leg over his knee revealing a purple sock with black cats on it.
“I’m not sure yet. I was trying to get ideas for restaurants,” he gestured to the phonebook as he said it, “But I can’t think of anything to do that he will like,” he paused for a moment.
“Still we shouldn’t be talking about my problems. We need to get the session started.”
Booth looked vaguely disappointed about the distraction to not do the session was stopped. Brennan merely looked thoughtful. Sweets grabbed his notebook and opened it again.
“Alright continuing to add on from the last session…” began the psychiatrist.
“Perhaps you should have sex with him,” suggested the forensic anthropologist, “that would be an excellent present.”
“Bones!” exclaimed FBI agent in chastisement to the socially awkward woman.
“What? I am merely suggesting that since the two have not consummated their relationship that it would be a good gift.”
Sweets bit back a groan. He was pretty sure his face was as red as it felt. Not because of the suggestion but due to the fact that they have consummated their relationship (all over their respective domiciles and once in his office as a matter of fact). He should have held out a couple weeks. He cursed his hormones.
“Doctor Brennan there are some things that I am not entirely comfortable with. My sexual life is one of them.”
He tried to will his blush away. He knew that his face was bright red at most and at least the tips of his ears.
“Oh you two have already had intercourse. My apologies then,” said the woman in her usual balanced manner. Sweets groaned praying that the floor would swallow him whole.
“Wait! Seriously?!”
The one time he actually wanted those damn phones to ring.
“Please can we not talk about this?” begged Sweets. The two shared a look of silent agreement before letting Sweets attempt a session.

The psychiatrist chewed on a fry thoughtfully later that day. He was at the diner staring at a couple of ads for restaurants that he tore out of Yellow Pages. This was not good. He was a bad boyfriend. He should have some sort of plan for what Merlin would like.
Except he honestly have no idea on what to actually do for the sorcerer’s birthday. He had bought Merlin’s present shortly after his friends had met him. It was tucked away in a drawer at his office. He only hoped that the immortal would like it. Still as Merlin’s boyfriend, he should do something wickedly, awesomely, really romantic.
He was pulling up jack.
“Hey Sweets,” greeted Angela as she took a seat across from him.
“Hi Angela. You want a fry?” asked the younger man barely looking up from the ripped out pages.
“I thought you would never ask, sweetie,” said the artist pulling the plate of fries toward her, “So Brennan says that you are having trouble figuring out a date for Merlin?”
“Yeah most of our dates have been last minute because of the profiling work I do. If not then, we just show up at the others place. We only had a handful of actual ‘dinner and a movie’ planned dates. It’s just that I really...want this to work. Most of my relationships just turn to sand in my hands. I can’t…won’t let this happen again.”
“I don’t think that’ll be a problem, sweetie,” assured Angela, “I’ve seen the way that he looks at you. It could be pizza at a Laundromat and he would still love it.”
“I know I just want it to be memorable, first birthday together and all that.”
“Sweets trust me. Just do what feels right and I promise he will love it.”
The psychiatrist nodded and took a drink of his water.
“I guess I have been freaking out for nothing.”
“Love makes fools of us all,” quoted Angela sagely biting into another fry.
Silence descended between the two before the artist broke it again.
“I also heard you two did the deed. Congratulations.”
“Brennan or Booth?”
“Brennan.”
Sweets could only shake his head and smile.

Merlin ambled up Lance’s walkway dressed in a pair of pressed pinstriped black pants and a loose white silk shirt opened up to reveal his graceful neck. He had on a nice suit jacket and a fedora placed on his head. He knocked on his boyfriend’s door. The door opened revealing Lance.
Merlin felt the air knocked out of him.
His boyfriend was dressed rather sexily. A pair of tight black jeans contoured to his legs, a black tank tight at the upper torso before bagging out at the lower covered his upper body. His eyes were drawn to a beautiful choker: black leather with a dark ruby red teardrop in the center. Studded leather cuffs covered his wrists and a red studded belt wrapped around his waist. Lance’s hair fell messily into his face with no product at all in it. His eyes were brighter due to the kohl outlined them.
Merlin pressed his lips to his boyfriend’s immediately.
This was the best birthday present ever.
Lance pulled away and smiled.
“Come on in.”
“There’s more?” asked Merlin following Lance inside the house.
“Yep,” said his boyfriend popping the ‘p’.
“Awesome,” answered the sorcerer with a grin. Lance grinned and took his hand. Their fingers intertwined easily. Lance led him through the candle lit hallways before stopping in the dining room. Candles, jack o lanterns, even a candelabra was lit basking the room in a dull glow.
Merlin laughed at the meal laid out for him on the table. Spaghetti, sauce, and cheesy garlic bread sat on the table waiting to be eaten. This was same meal that he had brought to Lance months ago before they even began dating. Lance shuffled awkwardly.
“Do you like it?” asked his boyfriend in a quiet voice. Merlin turned from the sight and walked over to him.
“Like it? Or kidding me?” He gently pressed his lips to Lance’s forehead. Their eyes met and Merlin grinned, “I love it, Lance. It’s amazing.”
Lance practically glowed with happiness. They sat down at the table together digging into the pasta dinner. They swapped stories together, talking in soft tones to each other. They shared a bottle of wine that tasted like grapes, earth, and summertime. In the glow of the candlelight they shared gentle kisses. They fed each other rich chocolate mousse. At the end of the meal, Lance pulled out a clumsily wrapped box.
“You didn’t need to get me anything,” began Merlin taking the box.
“I wanted to,” whispered Lance gently.
Merlin grinned widely before peeling back the wrapping paper with unrestrained curiosity. He pulled out a red silk pouch. He looked at it curiously thumbing the silky texture. He pulled the bag back and pulled out a ring.
“It’s not an engagement ring or anything. I don’t want you to freak out on me. I just saw and thought of you.”
It was silver in color with a sapphire, emerald, and amber colored stones in a row.
“I um had it engraved.”
Curiously Merlin brought up the ring and read the inscription before looking up at his boyfriend once reading it.
“It’s in the Old Tongue.”
“That just shows I am serious.”
Merlin slid the ring onto his thumb easily before kissing Lance. Their two foreheads met together.
“Happy birthday, Merlin.”
“Blessed be, Lance.”
Their mouths met together tasting the wine and the chocolate mixed with the others unique taste. And the inscription on the ring glowed in the candlelight.
Roughly translated it read: ‘Ruler of thy heart with magic pure.’
Basically it was Lance’s way of telling Merlin that he had no more doubts on their relationship. The engraving was finished days before. Written in Old Tongue to make it known to his magic…and given on the most magically powerful night of the year.
