A/N: Tenth in the Pretty Damn Close series. I KNOW RIGHT?! I have an artist too! moments-of-sen take a bow!
Merlin stretched out in the morning sunlight. He turned over and smiled at the man sleeping next to him. Lance was not awake yet. Even in sleep, he looked so beautifully young. Merlin smiled appreciatively at the body he had gotten to know quite well last night. He looked down at the hand gently placed on his waist and smiled.
It was hard to believe that it finally happened. Though the rapidly blooming love bite on his neck was proof enough for him. He grinned like a fool. He pressed his lips to the doctor’s forehead and smiled down at him.
Merlin was not exactly sure when or how it happened; but it did. Sometimes something like this will just barrel down on a person, even an immortal. Sauntering away it left the hit person staring up at the sky, seeing the stars for the first time. It only happened to him several times in his life.
Merlin was not sure when he realized that he loved Lance. He had no idea when his heart decided to open up and allowed the doctor entrance in. Arthur once told him, in a rare moment of generosity, that Merlin had too big a heart for his own good but he really needed to let people just love him, the person.
He was inclined to agree for the most part. He had twenty lovers (incarnations of Arthur do not count) over the years. Some of them knew what he could do not but not who he once was. Others knew that he could not die. A few figured it out by themselves. Others were left blissfully ignorant.
So Merlin took care of them and loved them fiercely with all his heart. Despite the pain that he knew he would feel when they died.
However, he did not allow them his entire being. Mainly because it was fine to love and take care of another person; it was just so much harder to let himself be treated the same way. There were four lovers in all his years on Earth that he allowed them to love him totally and completely.
The first one was Arthur. This is rather obvious. Arthur peeled back Merlin and looked past the magic. He looked past the fact that Merlin sucked at servitude and had mile wide stubborn streak. He was awkward, clumsy, and entirely unsure of himself and his power. Yet the prince had learned to love him for it. Destiny bound them for the ages together. Still Merlin wasn’t entirely sure if Arthur’s feelings were his own or destiny’s doing like he told Lance the previous night. Still he willingly came back to those arms time and time again.
The second one was Will, William Shakespeare. Will thought Merlin was smart. Merlin adored Will’s sheer brilliance. Merlin can still remember the late nights in Will’s writing space. The taste of smoke in the air from a tavern close by would fill the room to the brim. He remembered Will calling him his muse as they slowly made beautiful love. In the dark they would be intertwined, quiet as to not alert the neighbors. In the darkness they would whisper about their pasts. However, Will had a family and they needed him despite the fact that it broke Merlin’s heart.
Then there was quiet Avery in the seventeen hundreds. Avery was a slave who, with Merlin’s help, was able to buy his freedom back from his master. Amazingly he had a natural affinity with magic because of his father was a medicine man back in his country. So Merlin guided him through the process of learning magic, which he took to like a duck to water. Everything made sense with Avery by his side. Merlin had been alive way too long to care about race. But times were times and so they lived a simple (albeit magical) life together in a small cottage. Dark as night Avery who was whip smart with large hands that would hold Merlin late into the night as they exchanged kisses.
Now there was Lance Sweets. The fourth person to make Merlin give up bits of himself to be taken care of; the third lover who made him lose gravity with love. Here was a man who was smart, shy, and entirely unsure of himself and his place in the world.
Lance had no clue how special he was to Merlin.
Or even to other people.
Merlin smiled at the man blissfully sleeping next to him, ignorant of his musing.
He truly was beautiful. All lean muscles and vibrant youth stretched out on the bed before him. Dark, curly hair was drawing him in and making him look all the more innocent. Those bright, deep eyes drew him in when opened and reflected all his emotions. Merlin wanted to take Lance away to somewhere safe and protect him.
Merlin smiled as Lance finally stirred. His face was still flushed from the previous night’s activities (well early morning as well let’s be fair). Those wonderfully dark eyes opened and stared at Merlin with such love that he felt his heart swell up to the brim.
“Mornin’,” mumbled Lance still in the haze of sleep.
“Hey sleepyhead,” whispered Merlin as he buried his lips into Lance’s soft curls.
Lance stretched out in the morning sunlight. He moved closer to the warmth of another body. He smiled as Merlin’s smiling face. He loved that smile. It made his life better because it set those beautiful blue eyes aflame.
“Are you hungry?” murmured the British accented voice of his newly consummated boyfriend.
“Starved,” answered Lance honestly as he popped his shoulder.
Merlin’s eyes flashed gold. A couple seconds later, a hot breakfast came floating into the room.
“I hope you like waffles.”
“I love waffles, Merlin. You know that.”
The two shared a lazy kiss. The sort of kiss that happened in the haze of post coital happiness. Merlin grabbed the floating tray.
“What time do you have to be at the FBI?”
“Not until the afternoon. You have me all morning.”
“I like where this is going.”
“Breakfast first.”
“Yessir!”
They dug into the hot breakfast.
“Merlin?”
“Hmmm?”
“I love you,” mumbled Lance shyly. Sore, happy, and feeling entirely at peace with himself something that he haven’t felt since his parents died.
“I love you too. I don’t think you know how much.”
“Maybe…maybe you can show me?”
“Doctor Sweets! I do believe I like how you think!”
With that Merlin pinned Lance to the bed and they began to kiss passionately. A flash of gold from Merlin’s eyes sent the tray floating away. The two were so wrapped up in themselves that they didn’t notice they were floating inches from the bed.
Not that they even cared.

This line doesn't make sense to me when you say a short while later that there are only four lovers. I assume that the remaining 16 were incarnations of Arthur, but maybe you could rephrase this to make that more obvious.
