Summary: Sometimes a meeting is just a meeting. Other times it will definitely lead to something more. Merlin hopes this is the beginning of one of those times.
A.N.: Hopefully first part of a future 'verse. Still on the fence as it is an odd crossover. But hey! Let me know.
The first time that Merlin met Doctor Lance Sweets was a complete accident, literally. He had just moved to America with (magically) forged papers that proclaimed he had dual citizenship to America and England. On the day he met Lance he was coming back from his job at his antique and oddities store. He was still using a map to get around the city and was attempting to find a decent place to eat. Then it happened. He collided with another body and papers went flying. Merlin cursed as he saw that his map landed in a puddle of dirty water.
He sighed at the lost of his map and went to help the other person. He did not look at his as he gathered several objects that flew in the collision.
“God mate, I’m so sorry. I should really look where I am going,” apologized the immortal man profusely.
“No that’s okay. Oh man my cell is ruined,” said the stranger, who sounded around Merlin’s physical age.
“I’ll pay for it,” he answered. He stood up with the stranger’s briefcase in his hand. It was very nice one too. Definitely what Arthur would have gone for if he was reborn in this time. He finally met the stranger’s face. He was definitely young, almost baby-faced, with pale skin and dark eyes. Hot damn were those curls? He quickly wondered what it would be like to entwine his fingers in those curls.
“No it’s alright,” said the stranger. He finally met Merlin’s eyes. An instant connection fizzed to life for a brief moment. He was obviously taking in Merlin’s dark hair with bright blue tips, the tight skinny jeans, the lime green chucks, and the slightly baggy hoodie.
“Really mate I feel terrible. Maybe I could take a look at your mobile?”
The man seemed to become rather flushed, “Well I wouldn’t want to impose on you. I have to get back to my job soon. I’m a psychiatrist with the FBI and I have a meeting with these two. …They can be really impatient if I’m late. Which is you know totally understandable. …I’ll shut up now.”
Merlin blinked pleasantly surprised at the intelligence this man obviously possessed.
“Let me take a look at it, please? I’ll feel horrible if one of your patients tried to call you with some deeply personal crisis and they can’t reach their doctor.”
The man assessed Merlin, who was genuine, and nodded holding out the phone. Merlin grinned widely.
“Brilliant,” he made his way over to the nearest bench and began to pretend to fiddle with it as he gently prodded it with his magic. After a couple minutes, he finally got the phone fix and let out a triumphant noise as it was turned on.
“Ta-da!”
“Oh man, thank you so much. I don’t know what I can do to repay you. I mean it’s like I’m one of the douches attached to their phone twenty four seven but it’s really important you know? Plus you save me a trip to the cell phone store and…”
“It’s alright mate,” interrupted Merlin with a laugh, “And if you want to repay me. How about show me a decent place where I can get some lunch? I just moved here from England. I don’t know anyone here like at all.”
“Alright,” said the man after a couple seconds, “I don’t know your name though.”
“Merlin, Merlin Emerson. Owner of Destinies Antiques and Oddities,” grinned Merlin as he held out his hand.
“I’m Doctor Lance Sweets. Erm psychiatrist with the FBI and I do some profiling work to.”
“Pleasure to meet you, Lance. Now where are you taking me to lunch?”
“Well I know this little diner near here.”
“Perfect, lead on.”
Merlin would admit that he allowed himself to fall in love with someone other than Arthur. It hurt to have his heart ripped out every time the king died. So sometimes when Arthur was not reborn he would find love. Of course it was very rare.
As he walked with Lance listening to the man ramble on. He grinned widely.
It wasn’t destiny but it felt pretty damn close.
