A/N: Thank you everyone for your overwhelmingly kind words and great support!

The Prologue

Arthur Jameson is what most people would call ordinary. He has a decent, responsible job that leaves him most days in a small, impersonal office with him crunching numbers. This is despite the fact that he majored in English and History during university. However, in today’s world, you need to get a job where you can find it. He’s fairly handsome with short slightly spiky golden hair and blue eyes. He’s tall, broad, and runs every morning. He has his work done on time and has a perfectly pleasant demeanor. Arthur lived in a small flat that these most people have never seen and goes out to the pubs after work some days.

Yes, most people would agree that Arthur Jameson was perfectly ordinary indeed.

These most people do not know the real Arthur.

The moment that he’s away from these most people and in the company of those he trust. He’s loud and mischievous with a wicked grin and his eyes become almost electric. He has an inner light that what few friends he has call magnetic and bright. Like the flame that ensnares the moth. He’s devastatingly romantic and hates the job that involves him with these most people. He’d rather be at his flat working on his novel.

Some might say that Arthur is two faced. However, Arthur would just roll his eyes and make a face behind their back. He’d rather people WORK to see him instead of expecting himself bared (emotionally) on a silver platter.

His half sister, Morgan, always said that he had an internal light switch. That he turned off his real self and kept it off until he felt safe.

This is one of the rare things that he and Morgan agree on.

And then there are the parts of himself that he shows no one. Such as his dreams…that he has had since as long as he could remember.

Which is where the story begins in the middle of the one those said dreams.

“You are the worst servant ever,” a fond exasperation colored his voice. The shadow figured could only give a shy but wicked smile.

“And you are still a royal prat. I really don’t see why we are splitting hairs here.”

“What hairs? I was stating a fact.”

The figure walked past him and whispered in his ear, “So was I.”

He desperately tried to suppress the shudder that swept through him.

The scene changed.

He was in a forest on horseback and chasing down a male buck. God he felt so free. It was just him and his animal in the communal bond between man and beast. He could feel the power reverberate through him as he enjoyed the thrill of the chase. It set his blood aflame and awakened something deep and almost primal within.

He grinned and focused. He kicked the stallion trying to get it to move faster.

The scene changed again. And this time it was always a little less distinct and a little hazier.

A searing kiss sent waves of pleasure through his body. His arms clung tight to the naked back. He and the other, most definitely a man, exchanged passionate but loving kisses. He nipped and bit the neck gently trying to mark the soft skin as his.

Because he was his. Destiny said so.

They moved closer together both moaning and kissing. Fire erupted between them and the torches seemed to get just a little brighter, the atmosphere seemed to get a little heavier.

Golden eyes stared into his eyes and burned into his heart.

Then he would awake with a gasp and a name on his lips.

“Merlin…,” whispered Arthur to the non-existent entity. He groaned and rubbed his eyes before turning to glance at the clock.

5:54 blinked back at him unforgiving in those bright red numbers. He groaned and rolled out bed, knowing that sleep would not come.

After dragging his sorry ass out of bed and into a blistering hot shower, Arthur wiped the steam away from his bathroom mirror. He took in the tired look in his eyes and sighed before toweling off his hair. He got halfway dressed for work pulling on his pants and a black t-shirt before glancing at the clock again. He almost groaned seeing that it was only half past six.

He padded across his studio flat barefoot to the kitchen. He turned on the news as he cooked up some breakfast.

This was his life: a boring monotony that had been since he graduated uni. Dreams that he had since a child getting more and more vivid since his twenty first birthday. He began to eat his eggs on toast with only the news and him chewing for noise.

Then his phone rang and Arthur didn’t really need to guess who it was.

Who else would be up this early but the bane of his utter existence? It was his half sister, Morgan.

“Yes Satan’s Mistress?”

“Arthur! How did you know it was me?!” pouted Morgan from the other side of the line. Arthur snorted into the phone as he bit down on his toast again.

“Lucky guess,” replied the blonde with his mouth full.

“That’s disgusting.”

“Love you too, Morgan. Why are you calling?”

“I was worried about you! Lawrence called me last night all concerned because of how you’ve been acting recently. Frankly Arthur, I’m worried too.”

Arthur made a mental note to kill his best friend slowly or let his girlfriend know next time he got hurt in a bar fight. Whichever came first.

“You’re worried about? Why Morgan is that sound I’m hearing one of the seals of the Apocalypse cracking?”

“Oh ha-ha. That was so funny that I almost forgot to laugh.”

“I’m a laugh a minute, sister dearest.”

A silence descended upon the two as Arthur ate and Morgan was doing…whatever she did at a quarter to seven in the morning. Arthur reasoned that she possibly eating more children in order to keep herself eternally young.

“Arthur, seriously, I’m worried. You just seemed so…out of sorts lately.”

“I’m fine, Morgan.”

“No you’re not, you moron. Look Arthur please just take a couple of days off. Work on your novel, go camping, have a hot wild threesome with those twins you met in Sweden, just do something to de-funkify yourself.”

“Is funkify even a word?”

“It is in my mind,” replied Morgan, “Please Arthur just the rest of the week, please.

Arthur looked out the window, checking for the four horsemen of the apocalypse. He stared out the window for a few moments. It was a rare sunny day and the weather report said that there was good weather for the next couple of days. Maybe he could fake sick and go camping. Plus he knew Morgan. She would just keep annoying him until he gave in. At least he could do this and get away with some of his dignity.

“Alright Morgan, you convinced me. I guess I could ditch work for the rest of the week.”

“YAY! See you should really listen to your older half-sister, Arthur. I know everything.”

“Uh-huh,” muttered Arthur before saying his goodbye and hanging up. He had to call his moron of a boss and let him know that he won’t be coming in today; which he did with a sick form of glee. He even went as far as to throw in a hacking cough and a raspy voice.

It was his first minor act of rebellion in his working life. God did he relish it.

After he finished with his calls, he changed out of the suit pants and into a pair of comfortable jeans. With a huge grin he began to pack for his camping trip.

Camping had always been a favorite pastime for Arthur. Since the first time he went with a friend’s family at age seven, it was something that he loved to do. There was just something so…freeing and right about him in the woods. It made him feel more comfortable in his skin as he grew older. So he expertly got ready for his trip, humming a little tune under his breath as he got ready.

He had no idea where he was going when he went camping. Usually he just drove around aimlessly throughout the English countryside until he found a suitable place to set up camp.  The journey was one of his favorite parts just driving listening to music as green just rolled by.

It was very familiar though once or twice he could imagine his car being replaced by a horse and the paved road suddenly a rough trail.

Of course that was just his imagination taking his mind for a lark.

In an hour, Arthur was all packed out and enjoying the first nice day of summer as he drove through the English countryside looking for a place to set up camp.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The magic was rejoicing. The King was awakening, slowly stirring as if coming out of a deep sleep. Nonetheless, he was awakening.

The magic danced and whispered to the trees and the flowers, who always knew the best gossip. The flowers and trees in turned passed it onto the faeries and sprites. The faeries and sprites passed it onto to the griffins, unicorns, and everything else they could think off.

Magic was rejoicing!

Rejoice for the once and future King shall awaken the Sorcerer of Old! Emrys shall be awakened again!

Now all it had to do was guide the King to the Sorcerer.

All hail the Once and Future King of Albion! He shall awaken the Great Sorcerer, Emrys! They will awaken the magic yet again!

Rejoice!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arthur had been driving for about four hours at this point. He sighed as he looked for the perfect camping site.

Which was proving to be rather elusive and that kind of really made Arthur mad.

Actually it really just annoyed Arthur. The blonde hair man sighed and was ready to give up, when he caught sight of a forest coming up. Forget about the bad mood that was starting to over take him because happiness made that mood its bitch

The forest was perfect. He grinned as he pulled off the road and hid his car behind some trees. He hummed happily to himself as he unloaded the car. He could feel something buzz within him. A happiness that he always got when camps. It filled him up to the top and made him feel free.

He even started whistling. He never whistled.

Maybe Morgan was right. A break was what he needed to get out of the mood he was in since his twenty first birthday came and went. Maybe he could finally relax and try to work out those damned dreams.

He smiled happily as he slung on his pack and set out to find a place to set camp for the night.

Arthur set out into the forest.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The magic was singing. The King was here in the forest that he was supposed to find.

‘Help him,’ whispered magic to the trees and plants, ‘make his journey easy. Allow him to find our Kingdom and Emrys. Hide the things which would poison him. Allow him to find food. Wherever he rests for the night make sure the grass is at its softest. His firewood must crackle and burn brightly. For he soon shall free the Sorcerer.’

The trees and plants obliged the magic as they always have.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile in a crumbling castle that was covered in ivy that seemed to reach the sky, a place that was hidden by the trees and loved by all magical beasts and creatures was a tomb.

Well it wasn’t really a tomb. More like a bed.

The bed was made of beautiful quartz, crystal, and diamonds that swirled different colors. On the bed was a figure dress finely with only a pillow to support his head. A magnificent sword was held by a pair of exquisitely long fingered hands.

After a thousand or so years, it finally shifted and sighed out one word:

“Arthur…”

I'm not a part of the MerlinxArthur LJ community just yet... I'm just a sincere fan that discovered this little jewel of joy today.

I also am not usually a fan of this type of fic. The future "oh the King is back" thing is typically just so poorly done!

Which is why I was so pleasantly surprised to read your fic. I know it's only been technically a chapter and a prologue so far, but I've really really enjoyed it. Oh goodness, it's so refreshing that a GOOD author has tackled this and come out with something decent. I'm begging you, on behalf of all good authors and loyal readers out there, continue and continue soon!

Btw, your depiction of nature made me laugh. ^_^ Trees gossiping, go figure!

[identity profile] hopenight.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
You flatter me too much! Making me blush like that! I'm glad you liked it!

Well I read a bunch of reincarnation fics and I was like 'Oh why the heck not?'

You really think it's that good? I'm all shy about my writing. I'm glad you loved it.

Haha! It was just something that I liked to do. It's supposed to be a little funny like that.

Still not first. *pouts*

Anyway, love your description of arthur! it's great. all of its great!

Can't wait to see what happens next.

[identity profile] hopenight.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
lol! There there one day you shall get it!

I'm glad you liked my description of Arthur. He's teetering and he doesn't know it. It amuses me.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I love the idea of magic guiding Arthur and helping him find Merlin.

Can't wait for more of this!

[identity profile] hopenight.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I'm glad you liked it!!

First spell was impressive (others have to work in order to see the true nature of Arthur indeed of baring it on silver platter; and waking up, gossiping flora and fauna was great as well), let's wait for the first deed.:)

So far so very good, I do like how You parallel Arthur's small rebel at work with his awakening as a king.

[identity profile] hopenight.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you enjoyed it all! I wanted to make it feel very magical without kicking Arthur headfirst. That'll come next chapter.

Maybe. ;)

I really, really like it. The feel of it and the words you use to create the images are simply right.

I really liked the way you described Arthur - how he didn't really let people to get to know him. I see him like that on the show, so it *is* in character. And Morgana! I love your Morgana!

It was his first minor act of rebellion in his working life. God did he relish it.
I'm right there with you, Arthur D:

When will we see more? ;-) I can't wait to see Arthur's reaction to Merlin and vice versa. I've got a feeling it'll be rather epic.

[identity profile] hopenight.livejournal.com 2009-07-07 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you liked it. I was hoping to be descriptive. I'm happy you saw that.

I see Arthur like that on the show too. He has to mean so many things for different people. That he hides himself expect for the people that want to know him.

lol I'm glad you liked that line.

Oh that will be epic. Expect it around chapter 3.

Really liking this so far, looking forward to more :-)

loved how you weaved the show and the Arthurian legends...

looking forward to reading more!

Well more should be up soon!

[identity profile] erroneously111.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'm finding this really fascinating, and I really like the way you've done a slight twist on the names - they're not identical to the previous incarnations, which makes a lot more sense.

[identity profile] hopenight.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you enjoyed the sotyr so much. Well I figured to just warp them slightly. Ex: Morgana as Morgan Lancelot as Lawerence

I kept as Arthur as Arthur because it's still a fairly common name.

It always slight annoys when the names are EXACTLY the same. Because Morgana is rare and Lancelot is unheard of. So you know?

Commonality.

Did that make sense?

[identity profile] erroneously111.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get what you mean. And I do like how they're similar enough that it's easy to tell who is who - otherwise it'd be too confusing.

[identity profile] hopenight.livejournal.com 2009-07-08 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Here! Here!
